Big Springs Park

Cedartown, GA 30125
The area surrounding Cedartown’s Big Spring was first inhabited by the Cherokee. Prized for its abundance of sparkling spring water and shade-providing cedar trees, the Cherokee people lived here peacefully until May 26, 1838. As part of the 1830 Indian Removal Act, soldiers set up a military encampment at the spring, creating Camp Cedar Town. Over a month’s span, more than 200 Cherokee – men, women and children – were captured and interned within the camp before being forcibly marched to deportation camps in Tennessee and later, farther west along the tragic Trail of Tears to Indian Territory in present-day Oklahoma.
